Time is a wasting
Instead of diligently working on a newspaper article and a film review I have due tomorrow for my Gen Ed subject, I spent the majority of my night trying to find songs to download. Despite my failure to write down anything of consequence for either assessment, I did acquire a spiffy selection of covers, acoustic and live performances to my playlist.
I don't want to head into uni tomorrow to hand in my stuff because it's O-Week at uni and it will be overrun with freshers and people bribing you with free lollies to join their club or society. I hope that those Christian Bible Study people aren't out there in droves trying to get people to join their bible study. I don't have anything wrong with people actively taking part in their faith, but I do have issues with it when it involves persistently bugging people when they obviously aren't interested.
It kind of reminds me of when people still try to pick you up when you're clearly not interested, it's like you need to attach a big neon sign to your head that says 'leave me alone'.
I'm really not in the mood to do the article or the review, I think I may just go and listen to John Mayer and Glen Phillips sing Walk on the Ocean some more.
Sing it loud and clear
Train and Coldplay won Grammy's, and well deserved Grammy's at that. Yay.
Train rocks my socks, I'm so stoked they won. Eeeeee! As much as I love the song Drops of Jupiter, Eggplant (from their first album) is definitely my favourite Train song. Their cover of Cheap Trick's I Want You to Want Me also kicks ass.
Coldplay's 'Parachutes' is one of those albums I stick in my CD player and listen to for a whole week without tiring of it. There are so many awesome songs on that CD- Shiver, Trouble and the song I absolutely adore, Yellow. I'm looking forward to their next album.
I have moved into a 'covers' phase, downloading covers rather than downloading new songs- recommendations are most welcome.
Jason Wade's cover of You Belong to Me is so sexy, his voice makes it sound so much sweeter and more heartfelt than the original. Travis' cover of Baby One More Time cracks me up, but I wonder if critics would have applauded this song if it were written by someone else or if was performed by someone other than Britney? If Travis or even U2 had come out with this song in their style, I wonder if it would have been another one of their hits.
Listen to me whine
I haven’t shared the address to this site with my real life friends, I’ve basically kept it to myself for four years, only allowing a select few to know of it’s existence with the promise that they’d keep it to themselves.
I liked the whole secrecy thing, it made it all the more exciting knowing that I had this whole kinda double life thing happening- normal student by day, online journal freak by night. And it’s not because I talked about my friends behind their backs either or because I’m embarrassed about what I’ve written. I’ve never been one to easily share my thoughts with other people unless they were really good friends, I prefer to just sit back and take things in, making mental notes instead of engaging fully in the conversation. Eh, it’s hard to explain why I didn’t want people I knew to visit my site.
I’m not that stupid, or naïve, to think that my site would remain undisclosed to people I know in real life forever, you only need type Larissa into any search engine and my site usually appears in the first 10 sites matched. But I enjoyed the fact that I could have something that was exclusive to me.
I’m probably making no sense here, and babbling on as usual, but what I’m trying to say is that I’m aware that people I know in real life are regular readers of this site- either they found it by chance or because SOMEONE I THOUGHT I COULD TRUST DECIDED TO SHARE WITH HIS FRIENDS THE ADDRESS OF MY SITE.
I've known for quiet sometime now, I haven’t mentioned anything here before because I thought I’d let them believe that they were smart, sneaky cookies and that I was just some stupid girl writing about her life on a website. I’ve been quiet pissed off because people who break my trust, people who lie and pretend to be someone they're not give me the shits something severe. With the increased likelihood I may bump into said person and friends, I felt I should mention something. You know, so they don’t have to act all fake and ask how I’ve been (when they known exactly what I've been up to) or so they can be prepared in case I decide to bitch slap them.
Note to anyone reading who I may come in contact with in real life, please do not make it known to me that you actually read this and please respect my wishes for privacy.
As they say, ignorance is bliss...
In other news my period is a week early, and in my unpleasantly surprised state I engaged in a semi-comatosed seach for a pad or tampon. After confirming my feeling that we had absolutely nothing, I woke my poor dad up early so he could go to 7-11 this morning to buy me some stuff.
I bet it’s times like that when he wishes he had a son so that he could go and buy beer instead of feminie hygiene products.
I have no idea why I decided to share that, but while I'm on that topic, I'm wondering how those g-string pads they've been pimping on TV recently actually work. Wouldn't leakage be a major problem?
Marry me?
Oh. My. God.
Beth and Ben are engaged!!!!!!!
Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!
I know people get engaged all the time, but Beth and Ben are the first of our close friends to do so.
We all found out at Beth's party last night, at the end of her dad's speech he goes "Oh, and one more little thing. It's seems like Beth and Ben have an annoucement to make...", he didn't even get to finish off the sentence because all of us started screaming like mad and running up to Beth and Ben to give them our congratulations...and to oogle the beautiful ring.
Cries of "You bitch/bastard, you didn't tell us!" were abound, they got engaged last friday and kept it secret until her party. Planning for the buck's and hen's nights are underway, bring on the strippers! Hee.
Oh man, I still can't believe it. I knew Beth and Ben before they were Beth and Ben, and now they're going to be getting married, and sometime down the line they're going to be having little Ben and Beth's running around.
Wow, we really are getting old. It's all so exciting.
And it didn't end there
Damn, I really did jinx myself this morning, my day was just full of unpleasant surprises.
There were no buses from Central station to uni because the drivers were on strike, but there was no notices about it anywhere. There are tons of other Gen Ed subjects being held this week so there were hoards of students waiting at the bus stop. There was this dude in the Sydney Buses uniform standing at the bus stop, just standing there, and it wasn’t until like 15 minutes after most of us arrived that he decided to share the news about the bus strike with us, and also the general public who were waiting to go to other places. Hello, you’d think he would’ve told us when we GOT THERE rather than making us waste our time. Grr. However it was amusing to see people squabble over taxi’s.
I befriended 3 other students and we decided to go walking down the street until we came across a free cab. 20 minutes later we finally managed to score ourselves a ride. I felt kinda sorry for one of the other girls though, she was really late for an exam.
Then when I got to uni the third speaker wasn’t there.
I was still finishing off my section of the debate on the train but my writing was so bad, I couldn’t even decipher what I had written. So I had to go and find a computer to use to finish it off, type it up and print it out.
I went to the Commerce Quad Labs, but our lab accounts were all deleted and we can’t regain access until March 1st. So I went to the library to see if any computers were free at the printing station, but that floor of the library is being renovated so the computers had been removed.
I went up to the next level but all the computers were off with a sign saying ‘System is down’. Then I went downstairs to the bottom level of the library where they have more computer stations but they were all being used and I didn’t want to waste time waiting in line.
By now I was certain that today was destined to be Larissa’s crappy day, I went up to the Java @ Java computer café to use the computers there, but the computers had temporarily been removed during this week. I had been running around the campus for a good 25 minutes already and was severely pissed off, I decided to go RAD and use the computers there. Ordinarily they’re the computers people use when editing final documents and final printing, but in the state I was in I didn’t care and was fired up ready to tell someone where to shove it if they told me I couldn’t type up what I had written on those computers.
After typing it up and cheering at the fact that I finally had it done, I sent the document to the main printer that was at the cashier desk, however it ran out of paper and the damn cashier was so clueless as to how to refill it. She wouldn’t listen to me when I saw her struggling and offered to help, instead she said that she’d have a better idea of how to fix it than someone like me would. Pfft.
5 minutes later and the bitch still couldn’t figure out which drawer to open and being the impatient person I am, I went behind the counter, shoved her aside and did it myself, snidely commenting to the clueless cashier “It’s really quiet simple, it only takes some common sense”.
And to finally top off my day, on my way home from uni I had to sit next to some guy on the train who had the worst BO ever, I doubt he had any knowledge of what deodorant was made for.
Following the trend and doing the Friday Five
1. Hey, baby, what's your sign? Do you think it fits you pretty well? Pisces and I think it fits me pretty well, the sensitivity part in particular.
2. What's the worst birthday gift you've ever received? I’m seriously not fussy when it comes to receiving presents, you could buy me a pink pen and I’d be happy. I don’t think I’ve ever received anything that I didn’t want.
3. What's the best birthday gift you've ever received? It was for my 9th birthday. My parents took me to see the Australian Ballet perform at the Opera House, it was my first time ever to see proper ballerina’s on stage. I was in awe and I felt special getting all dressed up and doing a 'grown up' thing.
4. What's the best way you've celebrated your birthday thus far? 18th birthday, dangerous quantity of alcohol consumed by my friends and I but it was the most excellent night. Ah, the joys of celebrating your first legal time to drink and enter a bar- no hassles with fake ID or doing the double stamp trick.
5. What are your plans for this weekend? Working tomorrow afternoon and Sunday morning. Beth’s 21st party tomorrow night with school friends- we have to come dressed as something magical or make believe. Beth and I went to school together and we also work together now, and on Sunday night we’ve got her birthday picnic at Cronulla with the rest of our work friends. Somewhere in between I’ve got to start making my scrap book for my 21st.
Goooood morning
It's only 7:45am and my day has already started off crappy, which I don't think is a good sign.
I got woken up by a phone call from my mum at 6:45am, we both have the same mobile phone and she had taken mine with her to work by mistake and locked the SIM card. Dude, you'd think she realise after two times if it doesn't accept the PIN code that something must be wrong. I don't have time to go to her work and swap phones so we both have to go phone-less for a day, which I think eventually piss my mum off since she uses her phone all the time for business calls.
In my semi-conscious state, I proceeded to make my breakfast only to spill a whole glass of orange juice all over the carpet, breaking the glass in the process as it clipped the edge of the table.
I have as yet to write my debate, and am not being very successful at the moment since the lure of stalking people's websites outweighs the need for me to come up with crap for our argument in the debate. I have 30 more minutes before I have to get off the computer and then 10 minutes to get ready for uni, and make my way to the station to catch the train.
You know I really should stop writing now and get my ass into gear, but I can't be bothered. Bleh.
Blah, Blah, Blah
I have been doing a Gen Ed subject this week at Uni. I figured why bother stretching a subject out for the whole semester, when I can get it over and done with in a week? The subject I'm doing is called 'Science and Cinema', and it has to be the cruisest subject I've ever done. All we've done this week is watch movies (related to science of course), six in total. The movies haven't been that brilliant, but I'm not complaining- Outbreak, Jurassic Park (the redeeming movie out of the lot of them), Gattaca, The Saint, Chain Reaction and The Man in the White Suit. We have to do a five question quiz in relation to each movie, but the questions are basic like 'why can't the dinosaurs breed amongst themselves on the island?', also the quizes are peer marked, so obviously we're all going to give each other full marks. We have three other assessments for the subject, a film review and news paper article that we just have to hand in next week and also a debate which we give tomorrow.
My debate topic is 'Scientists are portrayed realistically in cinema', my team has the affirmative side and I'm the first speaker. We only got given the topics today and also were only randomly allocated into teams by the lecturer this afternoon, but third member of out team didn't turn up to class, the bastard. So either he shows up tomorrow to be our third speaker and just has to wing it, or I have to get up again and do the closing arguments. Please turn up tomorrow, turn up tomorrow!! I hope that the guy makes an appearance, or else Louise and I won't be impressed. I have the points I'm supposed to discuss, but I haven't had the time to write down my stuff- I had better things to do this afternoon, like watching Black Hawk Down.
Holy Shiznit!
Black Hawk Down = a fantabulous movie
It just started showing here today, and after hearing so much about it we had to go and check it out after class. I must say, it was truly worthy of all the hype and attention it has gotten in the media. I was floored by how powerful and in-your-face it was.
Woo-Ha Ridley Scott and the amazing cast. I must get myself a copy of the book soon.
You rock
I never really do get the chance to thank people who make the effort to visit my site and leave comments, by email, guestbook or the little box. It's nice to know that someone is actually listening to what I have to say.
Thank you for giving me a few minutes of your day :)
Random Shiznit
1. Despite coming last for most of the indoor netball competition this season, we won only 5 games, we somehow managed to make it into the semi-finals and ended up kicking ass in that game to play in the finals. We didn’t win the competition, but runner up is pretty damn good. I even got a trophy. Woo, go Cosmo’s!
2. Valentine’s Day was nice ;)
3. I have no free weekends until the end of March since I’ve got one 21st birthday party after another. At least I won’t complain of having nothing to do on the weekends. I’m looking forward to Tahnee’s masquerade party though, that will rock.
4. Australian Survivor is the worst. Show. EVER. It has nothing on it’s US counterpart- Mark Burnet is probably ashamed to have allowed Australian’s to make their own version of the show. It was an hour of my life absolutely wasted, I could have been watching better things (like THE WEST WING). I thought the whole premise of the show was to have the contestants ‘survive’ the elements and such, not all being given matching spray jackets and digital cameras.
5. Adam Garcia is the latest Hollywood star I’m lusting over. He is so damn sexy. Rawrr. I watched Coyote Ugly about 7 times the other week because he was in it. Sam had to confiscate the DVD because hearing Leanne Rimes sing started to get to him, although I think he was really just jealous that Adam Garcia was stealing my attention away from him.
RSVP
When deciding the final numbers for the guest list for my birthday party, I was doing it on the assumption that some people wouldn’t be able to make it. So I invited more people than can actually fit in the restaurant. People overbook all the time because there are bound to be no-shows.
Only a week after sending them out, already half have RSVP-ed saying they can come, and I think I will be kinda screwed if this trend continues.
Although I must say, I’m feeling loved.
Along with the RSVP-ing comes the inevitable “what do you want for your birthday?” To which I answer, “I don’t know”. I know that is the most annoying answer anyone can give, but I honestly don’t know.
I’ve been interrogated by friends, and one resounding thing that came from listening to them is that they need to go looking for something that is ‘Larissa-ish’.
What determines if something is ‘Larissa-ish’ (or not) is beyond me. Although when I asked the words ‘sweet’ and ‘girly-girl’ came up all the time. Hmm...
Why?
For 4 years I’ve been able to sit myself in front of the computer and type away, sharing truthful and minute details of my life to whoever stumbled upon my site.
I wonder why people come here in the first place.
Do people come to just laugh at how stupid I can be?
Do they come because they actually care about what’s happening in my life or me ?
Do they come because they’re bored and have nothing else to do?
To me my life isn’t very exciting, I’m just another person trying to get through her day without any major drama’s.
What is up with the weather? Last month Sydney was ablaze with bushfires, now the city is swamped with torrential rain.
I wonder if Mother Nature is going through severe PMS.
Woo!
Ah, how Monday nights rock. Channel 7 has graciously decided to show repeats of Buffy in Season 3, which is full of complete Scooby Gang goodness. If only Buffy had remained this good in it’s current season, I’ve been put off by all the Spike and Buffy nookie.
Boo
The West Wing being shown at 10:30pm on Tuesday nights. WTF? It deserves a prime time spot. Pfft. Damn you Channel 9, damn you.
Hmm...
Contrary to many of the truths I hold dear in life, I sincerely believe that men are better equipped to be healthy individuals because they concentrate on achieving in a few key areas, and don’t worry about fulfilling every fantasy, or meeting every expectation. The cliché is that men are easy to please- and compared to us females, they very well are.
Give a guy a good job, a good mate or two, beer and the occasional access to a naked woman and he will be utterly content…I realise the specifics of this formula varies a bit, but the principle as a whole remains in tact.
Compare that to what the modern woman has come to believe she needs to have in order to be content- the ideal partner, the perfect figure, the ever-expanding wardrobe, the luxurious home, the high-paying corporate career that conveniently leaves time for a diverse social life and eventually, the raising of wonderful children (or the funds to afford a full-time nanny).
It’s societal expectations, it’s the mantra the modern woman has internalised. It’s enough to make you want to long for the 1950s. Well, almost. But still, it was a time when models could be voluptuous and no one minded, when young girls could look to their mothers and grandmothers as relevant role models, not relics of a different era. Women we’re expected to be superhuman. You didn’t have to ‘have it all’ to be fulfilled, or at least ‘having it all’ was a much narrower, much more attainable set of ideals- namely a loving husband, good children, a nice home and the support of friends and family. At least that was how the deal was supposed to operate. Many women obviously felt it was the biggest con going or they never would have gone to all the hassle of rebelling, protesting, getting jobs and burning perfectly good lingerie.
Apart from the ability to pee standing up and not having to go through the 350 (give or take a couple) periods I’m expected to have in my lifetime, I wonder if life would be easier, and more fulfilling, if I was a guy.
Copious amounts of alcohol + a hotel room + Star City Casino = a night of shenanigans
Gorging ourselves at the all you can eat buffet, which had to be the biggest buffet in Australia. I got dizzy just looking at all the food.
Pooling our money to gamble, which proved successful at first however greed got the better of us. I think we ended up just breaking even.
Getting hit on by sleazy 60 year old men, which at least resulted in free alcoholic beverages. The prices of drinks are insane at the Casino- $5.50 for a beer or glass of house wine, $5.70 for spirits. Pfft.
And playing drinking games in the hotel room bought for the night all combined to make Nikki's 21st a fun-filled event.
Cheers
I was supposed to go out on a pub crawl tonight, but I'm not in the mood to brave the rain and drink myself silly. That, and the fact I don't want to rock up to work at 8am tomorrow morning feeling seedy.
Drinking myself to a state of paralysis is set for tomorrow night when we hit the city to go out for Nikki's 21st. Woo. Although, I'm already feeling sorry for the poor bastards...err, customers...who will have to deal with me at 9am on Sunday morning.
