Work hard, play harder

This year was a big year for the agency with lots of wins and after a year of working our asses off it was time to play at our Christmas party.

And partying is something that Singo's does best.

After the gorgeous location of Bondi Icebergs last year, this year topped it with having it at the very posh Café Sydney. All the tables and chairs were moved out, it was very weird seeing it stripped bare with only a few tables outside, but we soon filled up the place. The theme was 'Silver with a touch of white', the guys stuck to it but the girls not so much.

The view was simply breathtaking; I don't think I'll ever get sick of watching the sunset over the harbour. The alcohol kept flowing all night, as did the mountains and mountains of delicious food:

Goat cheese tarts
Blue vein cheese tarts with chutney
Smoked salmon on toasted potato bases
Fresh tuna on cucumber
The biggest tempura prawns I've ever seen
Mushroom and cheese risotto balls with pesto sauce
Mini risotto cups
Gourmet fish and chips in cute little boxes
Noodles in cute little boxes
Peking duck
Chocolate and hazelnut tarts
Raspberry fruit tarts

The DJ was pretty dodge, but we all hit the dance floor and danced til they kicked everyone out.

Day in the life

For those who work in online advertising or in website development and programming I'm sure you can all relate to this. So cute and a clever way to present to clients.

13 December 2005

I have gotten this email 12 times already today and it's not even 9am.

Not sure what to think of it, if it's just someone trying to rile up others or if it is in fact true but it just makes me wonder what's going to happen over the weekend.

Please forward this warning to everyone you know, particularly residents of Cronulla, and the Sutherland Shire in general.

I am not normally interested in spreading messages of fear, but I would never forgive myself in this instance if I didn't, with the majority of my friends and family living in the Shire. I have been advised that there will be a serious retaliation to yesterday's rally in Cronulla, this Sunday, 18 December in Cronulla, by several very large Lebanese gangs. The groups involved include the Lebanese gangs of Bankstown, Punchbowl, Auburn and so on. I have been shown the messages that are being sent around amongst these communities organising this retaliation, which include advising gang members to come to Cronulla "strapped", which means armed with guns, and I'm sure most likely more than that.

This is such a terrifying thought. Other than advising the police, which I have already done, I don't really know what else to do other than warn everyone I know, and urge you to also warn every single person you can, who lives in, or may be at Cronulla, or the Shire on Sunday.

Having been a resident of Cronulla for 10 years, I understand some of the frustrations from locals who live in the Shire with regards to the large groups of people, mostly males, of Middle Eastern background heading down to Cronulla Beach in gangs to intimidate others and generally cause trouble. I have been made to feel uncomfortable, harrassed and intimidated myself, on the beach by such groups. And I also understand that the cruel and senseless bashing of two Cronulla lifesavers last week, was for many Shire residents, the final straw.

But also, in saying that, with our real estate business being in Padstow - a strong multicultural area, we have dealings with many different types of people, and many different nationalities, including people of Middle Eastern background, both Christian, Muslim, Australian born and non Australian born, who feel very fortunate to be able to live in our country, many of whom have whole heartedly assimilated into our culture, and although they follow their own religions, still have respect for Australian culture and way of life. But I know that unfortunately there are also a large number of people of this background who do not.

I hope that things don't get too ugly and that innocent people don't get hurt. There is Christmas Carols in Gunnamatta Park on Sunday where usually a lot of families gather, I'm guessing these families will re-think their plans.

It's sad that things have come to this.

On a lighter note: I managed to get two A Reserve tickets to U2's second show in Sydney.

Hurray for the Ticketek site not shitting itself this time and letting me purchase tickets!

Ouch for the $203 price tag for one ticket. Looks like I'll be eating toasted cheese and tomato sandwiches for a month to pay for it.

The events of the weekend have completely and utterly floored me.

What happened on the weekend was a fucking disgrace and just wrong on every fucking level - I can't comprehend how anyone taking part in these riots could think they were doing the right thing.

It's no secret that The Shire is a predominantly white community, it's something I've had to deal with growing up there but I never thought their racial hatred would manifest itself in the way it did on the weekend.

However, I can see how this racial hatred develops in the youth of The Shire. They grow up not mixing with other cultures, there are only ever token Asian/Middle Eastern/Indian students in local schools and the only exposure they get to these other cultures is the stereotypes that are presented to them in the media, in the movies and in television. It's only those kids who go to the private schools in the city that are exposed to the multicultural society that Australia is or those kids who make the effort to be more socially aware, the rest go about their lives in their sheltered worlds.

It's a very sad and disturbing trend that I've noticed and it makes you wonder what kind of people the youth of today will grow up into. It also makes you wonder why their parents and teachers aren't educating them more about what it is to live in a multicultural society.

Another fuel to the riots is the fact that a lot of people in The Shire are well off, with Cronulla and surrounding suburbs being very affluent, this gives them a holier-than-thou attitude to those other Australians who live out in the not so well off suburbs. This is something that has pissed me off for a long time about the attitude of some people who live in The Shire - your wealth does not make you any better than those less fortunate than you, it doesn't give you the right to say who and who can't come to the area. Get the fuck over yourself.

These things don't in any way justify their behaviour - it was just wrong. Do they not see that rioting and lynching people the way they did on the weekend is stooping as low as those who bashed the lifesavers? They are just as bad as each other.

I also don't appreciate the message the fucktards involved in these riots are doing for the rest of the community who do believe in being open and tolerant. Also, I am not sure that all those involved on the weekend were all locals.

I think it all comes down to respect - the locals and visitors respecting the fact that there are other people who have the right to come and enjoy the Australian way of life, no matter where they come from.

And John Howard - where the fuck are you? Why haven't you commented? Why aren't you weighing into this, it's your responsibility and JOB to show some leadership in a time like this. Be a man and step up, don't leave it to the State to deal with this.

It just doesn't stop.

This has been all over the local news lately, and it seems like things can only get worse.

Here's hoping that this doesn't get even uglier on the weekend.

And in a completely unrelated note, I went to pole dancing class last night. Man, I'm not even a lesbian but watching the instructure show us moves was turning me on. The things she was doing with that pole were hot, hot, HOT. Here boyfriend must be counting his blessings.

Hubba hubba

"Overall, a great sounding album and one that won't disappoint guitar freaks such as myself, solo's applenty and great rhythm sections. And finally an album where he isn't crooning to your girlfriend - much." Wise words babe, but it still doesn't stop me from want to jump John Mayer.

I don't know what it is about him, but watching him play still puts lots of x-rated thoughts in my head.

Exhibit A and Exhibit B.

Oh yeahhhhhh.

This is just disgusting.

These guys volunteer to help keep people safe. They give up their free time to make sure no one in their local community gets injured and also give up their lives to save people like these louts.

As someone who's grown up in Cronulla it angers me that people come and do this.

Don't bring your sort of lifestyle to our area, just because you're bored with yours mean you should do that here. Either play nicely or stay away.

2 December 2005

Thou Shall Not Kill.

So it's done, and it makes me wonder how draconian and barbaric this was.

I don't think we should be glorifying him or making a hero out of him either. He did break the law and potentially could have destroyed thousands of lives and should have been punished, but not like that. No one deserves to die like that, no matter what they did, nor do I believe anyone has the right to take someone else's life away from them.

We live in 2005 where you would have thought that basic human decency, compassion and forgiveness are the values we live by.

Capital punishment is long overdue for a redundancy.
